Stable Doors

If you want a door that you can leave open but not be concerned about children or pets escaping, a stable door could suit you perfectly.

Stable doors can be used as front or back doors, although they are most often used as back doors, because it is more common to leave a door open in the back garden. With more online shopping and therefore, more deliveries, a door that opens at the top while leaving the bottom closed for security is becoming more practical.

Stable doors have a split door design, with the top and bottom halves being able to open independently. This means you can leave the bottom half open for ventilation while keeping the top half securely shut, safe in the knowledge that your little ones or beloved pets can’t make a break for it!

Stylish Back Stable Doors

Stable doors are most often used as back doors. You are more likely to leave a door open to the back garden than the front. Sometimes, the back door is the only source of natural light and leaving a normal door fully open could prove hazardous for young children and pets. You may even want to prevent the neighbour’s pets or even foxes from coming in. Stable doors are especially popular for cottages and older properties for this reason.

The answer is a stable door that allows you to leave the bottom half closed and the top half open. A bolt on the back allows you to also use it as a single door.

An exterior stable door is ideal for any external entrances, offering practicality and enhanced security with no compromise on style.

We supply all types of residential doors, including front doors, back doors and patio doors.

Stable Entrance Door

A stable door is just as secure as a one-piece door. The top and bottom sections lock separately so you can feel secure in your home. A stable door enables you to answer the door to take in deliveries safely.  You can open the top half and leave the bottom half locked so there is no chance of fast little legs running past you and getting to a road.

Stable doors are available in uPVC and composite.

A choice of styles and many colours enable you to design front, back or side doors that are personal to your home. From classic to contemporary, intriguing to bold, a wide range of options means you have the freedom to choose a style that is right for you.

Stable doors can add country charm to traditional and modern homes, making them the perfect door for you if you want  style and functionality. The difference between modern stable doors and traditional timber options is clear. Modern designs offer improved energy efficiency, enhanced security, and greater customisation options.

We cover Cardiff, Newport, Swansea,  the Vale of Glamorgan and surrounding areas.

Are Stable Doors More Expensive?

Stable doors often are a little more expensive than a standard single door, and the reason is fairly simple. You are essentially getting a door that functions in two different ways: as a full door when locked together and as a split door when used separately. That extra engineering, plus the need for stronger hinges, extra seals, and a more complex locking system, usually adds to the cost.

The price difference is not usually huge, but it is noticeable enough that homeowners sometimes wonder why. The upper and lower halves need to line up perfectly, stay rigid over time, and lock securely. This means more reinforcement inside the frame and more precision in manufacturing. That extra detail is what gives the stable door its smooth operation and keeps draughts and rattles at bay.

That said, most people do not choose a stable door to save money. They choose it because it adds practicality, safety, and a little something different to the home. When you look at the extra functionality you get, the small increase in cost often feels like good value rather than an unnecessary upgrade.

What are the Differences Between Stable Doors and Full Height Doors?

When you look past the obvious split down the middle, there are some key design differences between a stable door and a full door that homeowners do not always realise. One of the biggest is glazing. Stable doors are rarely glazed at the bottom half. The lower section needs to stay solid for strength and stability, so the glass, if you choose it, is almost always placed in the top half only. With a full door, you have far more flexibility: full-height glazing, half-glazing, or even large decorative panels are all options.

Letterbox placement is another detail that usually changes. On a full door, your letterbox can be positioned wherever you prefer, but on a stable door, it almost always has to sit in the bottom half. This is because the top half needs to stay clear so it can open independently and seal properly. It means you lose some design freedom, but the positioning keeps the door working smoothly.

Colour and style options are available for both, but the panel layout on a stable door tends to lean towards a more traditional or cottage look. Full doors can range from completely modern and minimalist to highly decorative, so they offer a broader design range.
