Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year, but unfortunately it’s also the busiest time of the year for burglars. Why? Well, as you can imagine, houses are more likely to contain more valuables over the Christmas period what with the many electrical appliances, gadgets and toys being bought left, right and centre.
So, which items are most likely to get stolen? Find out here and learn how you can protect your home from being raided by a burglar.
1. Bicycles
2. Mobile phones
3. Power tools
4. Laptops
5. Tablets
6. Cameras
7. Golfing equipment
8. Gardening tools
9. Audio equipment
10. TVs
Bicycles make up 17% of theft claims, but as you can see, electrical devices are very close behind, with three items in the top five being electrical. You’ll no doubt have at least one of these items in your home over the festive period, even if they’re not presents! In fact, six of the world’s seven billion people have mobile phones according to a U.N. report. Therefore it’s important to follow some tips, so that you can protect presents and belongings.

1. Take Your Packaging to a Public Recycling Bin
If you leave packaging for a swanky TV or games console outside your house, burglars are going to know these new, pricey goods are inside. So, take any expensive packaging to a public recycling bin and you’ll avoid burglars being attracted to your home.
2. Always Lock Your Garage or Shed
If you’re storing Christmas presents in your garage or shed, you’d be stupid not to lock it after you. However, sometimes, you can get distracted. Perhaps the doorbell rings or the dog barks, and you leave the garage or shed without locking up. Well, if burglars are keeping a close eye on your house, they’ve just hit the jackpot.
Make it a habit to lock up every time you leave your garage or shed; it’ll soon become second nature to you and then you’ll never forget, even if the phone rings! And if you still think you’ll leave it unlocked, invest in security features such as lighting or an alarm.
3. Invest in Timed Lighting
Are you going away for Christmas? Then it may be worth investing in timed lighting, especially if you’ll be away for a long time. Four out of five burglaries occur when no one is at home and timed lighting will make your home appear occupied, which will deter burglars from attempting to break in.
4. Install Security Locks for Double Glazed Windows
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And if your windows are easily accessible, you’re basically leading the way for burglars to get into your home. So, what can you do? Add extra security to your double glazed windows by installing security locks. Not only will you protect your home, but you’ll give your windows a bit of character too.
If you don’t already have double glazed windows then there’s no time like the present. Secure your home with double glazed windows and have yourself a very merry Christmas with no broken windows or worse, stolen presents!
