Burglars love Christmas, and we’re not just saying that because of Christmas classic Home Alone’s plot! It’s common knowledge that burglars are drawn to homes over the festive season, what with the abundance of presents being bought.
You’ve no doubt started your Christmas shopping. In fact, if you’re super organised, you may even have finished! So, what can you do to step up your security and prevent intruders from breaking in? Find out here.
Close Your Curtains
Of course we’re not saying to keep your curtains closed all day, but when you turn the lights on in the evening, make it a ‘must’ to close them. Why? Well, if you don’t, people will be able to see directly into your house. And if you have a Christmas tree with lots of prezzies piled underneath, they’ll be visible to passers-by. You’ll basically be flaunting your goods right in the faces of burglars!
Close those curtains and keep burglars at bay.
Don’t Post Your Plans on Social Media
It’s a given that you’re going to be excited about your plans for the festive season, but be sure not to announce them on social media. If you have plans to go away or stay with family and you share this information online, you’re basically giving burglars the green light to go and raid your home.
By hashtagging drivinghomeforchristmas along with the name of the airport you’re departing from, prowlers will know you won’t be home any time soon, therefore your home will be a prime target.
Upgrade Your Locks
There’s no harm in making your front door more secure by updating your locks. Whilst it may seem like a bit of a faff, it’ll most definitely be worth it in order to keep burglars away and protect your pad. And if you’re not particularly handy, get in a locksmith or carpenter to do the job.
Don’t scrimp on locks, buy the most secure you can afford. Ideally, you’ll want high quality British Standard Locks if you don’t already have them, however, it may be worth fitting a door chain or peephole for peace of mind.
Install Double Glazed Windows
If a burglar can’t get in through the doors, they’ll try the windows. And they don’t even have to break a window to enter a home. If you leave your windows unlatched, or have windows with weak locks, a burglar can easily enter your property.
Be sure to invest in double glazed windows and whilst it may be a stretch at Christmas, it’ll be an investment you won’t regret. Double glazed windows offer extra security whilst also making you feel safe.
